From July 2 to 5, Debrecen will play host to the 30th Béla Bartók International Choir Competition (BBCC), an event that has stood as one of the world’s most prestigious professional choral competitions for decades.
Founded in 1961 and sporting a revitalized format since 2024, the competition has reached a major milestone. The prestige of the event and the global choral community’s intense interest are well reflected in this year’s application figures. Commenting on the turnout, Competition Director and conductor József Nemes noted:
“In this anniversary year, an exceptionally high number of applications allowed us to select the absolute finest ensembles from the international choral scene. Coming from all corners of the globe, they bring not only world-class vocal excellence but also the musical gems of their own cultures.”
The 2026 edition promises audiences a genuine musical journey around the world, bringing together eleven choirs from four continents. The Americas will be represented by the Riverside City College Chamber Singers from California and Coralia – Concert Choir of the University of Puerto Rico. Traveling to the city of Debrecen from Asia is Indonesia’s The Resonanz Children’s Choir, while Africa is represented by the Cape Town Camerata. Europe’s contenders include Germany’s Santinig-Bonn and the Mixed Choir MASKA from the Babīte Cultural Education Centre in Latvia. Turkey is sending two outstanding ensembles, the Alegria Choir and the Jazzberry Tunes. The home crowd will have plenty to cheer for as well, with Hungary’s own Béla Bartók Women’s Choir, the Zoltán Kodály Youth Mixed Choir, and the Vántus Boys’ Choir taking the stage.
The international jury for this anniversary edition is chaired by Georg Grün from Germany, one of the most respected authorities in contemporary choral music. Joining him on the panel are Zsuzsanna Gráf, Tristan Caliston Ignacio, Csaba Somos, and Philippos Tsalahouris.
All rounds of the Béla Bartók International Choir Competition are open to the public. Adding to the excitement, the program features world premieres specially commissioned by the competition, performed by the Lautitia Children’s Choir and the Kodály Choir. The traditional gala concert, titled “Vivat, crescat, floreat!”, will take place on July 3rd at the Kölcsey Center, featuring brand-new works by composers such as Máté Balogh, Márton Levente Horváth, Katalin Szalai, and Péter Zombola. Additionally, Miklós Csemiczky’s oratorio Credo will receive its world premiere, performed jointly by the Kodály Choir and the Kodály Philharmonia.
“I like to use the paradox that contemporary choral music is currently experiencing its renaissance. One of our core missions is to showcase Hungarian works that foreign conductors can take home with them and integrate into their own repertoires,” says Zoltán Kocsis-Holper, chief conductor of the Kodály Choir and chairman of the competition’s artistic committee. He emphasized that the absolute support of living composers and present-day choral culture has been an unwavering pillar of the competition since its inception.
The professional backing of the event is ensured through a close partnership between Kodály Philharmonia Debrecen and Jeunesses Musicales Hungary, alongside media partner Papageno. Thanks to this collaboration, all public rounds of the competition will be available via global livestream.
The stakes remain incredibly high: the Grand Prix winner of the Debrecen competition will earn an invitation to the exclusive European Grand Prix for Choral Singing, organized annually on a rotating basis by the association of Arezzo, Debrecen, Jūrmala, Maribor, Tolosa, and Varna.
